Evaluation - Question 5 (Evan)

How did you attract your target audience?

We chose our target audience to be within the age of 15-25 as they would likely be searching for an adrenaline rush with their friends and we think that our film would provide and satisfy them with the thrill that they seek. Furthermore, this age group would have money to spend on entertainment due to most of our audience still being in full time education and would probably have part time jobs. It’s with this extra time that they have which would allow them to spend their leisure pound on entertainment.

Our film would appeal to this type of audience due to the various angles e.g. high/low angles, different types of close ups and the massive contrasts of natural light with the enigmatic dark lighting that is repeatedly used throughout the opening.

The combination of the camera angles and lighting would provide the audience with a severely creepy atmosphere that’ll make them very conscious of their surroundings with the slightest touch from another person sending shivers down their spines. Adding onto this, this film would definitely not be suitable for young children as the dark lighting and lack of dialogue would either make them feel very bored or make them feel terrified for days as the nature of the film isn’t for the faint of heart due to the accompanied peaceful piano piece in the background may trick the children into thinking that they can easily watch something that will shock them.

Our audience would be drawn into our film and watch out for the minimal dialogue. They’ll try to understand the story through the facial and figure expressions that is present in our film. This accompanied by the peaceful music would definitely trick the audience and leave them in suspense as they wait to see what happens next. Furthermore, with minimal dialogue questions will be raised forcing our target audience to watch the film several times so that they can completely grasp what has happened in the film. This is something new to the thriller genre yet still holds true to the thriller genre’s typical conventions.

Our target audience will already have questions before watching the film such as; how can you make a thriller with minimal dialogue? Following this, our audience will also be attracted to the title Broken. as few films place a full stop at the end of their title. This too is something new to the thriller genre. With the placement of the full stop at the end of 'Broken.' it implies that the title acts as a statement implying that our female protagonist is mentally broken. This will also attract our target audience.

Furthermore, a key aspect of the 21st century, is the heavy use of social media such as Twitter or Facebook. We used this as an advantage to attract our audience by creating a Twitter page. By having social media, we are able to advertise our audience and attract them to our film all around the world.

We also created Posters that would be displayed on Billboards, Bus shelters, cinema's etc.

Evaluation - Question 4 (Evan)

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think that males and females within the age of 15-25 would go to watch this film. People watch thrillers so that they can gain an insight into others’ circumstances and emotions. People within our targeted age group also watch thrillers because they want to start conversation with others as thrillers are both action packed and take a lot of thought to work out thus conversation can be generated. We watch thrillers as they offer us escapism from everyday life.  They are not relaxing films as they create a lot of suspense therefore thrillers are seen so that people can view the extreme differences of identity and compare it to themselves.
A film that is similar to ours would be Se7en which was directed by David Fincher. This type of thriller between the character’s emotional and mental state would attract an older, more intelligent audience similarly to our target audience. These types of thrillers also have some kind of mystery to work out and there is also an element of horror in them allowing the audience to feel quite disturbed until the end.
According to the bbfc, when judging what certificate a film should get examiners look at issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, behaviour and violence. They also consider the context of the film and the impact of the work (how it affects the audience)

Therefore, we decided to provide this film with a certificate of 15  due to the enigma and unsettling imagery that would be presented as the films plot unravelled. We aimed for our target audience to feel unsettled throughout the film and we think that we achieved this through our chosen target audience.

The people within our target audience would be both male and female and have various styles that maybe unique to the individual.

Male audience:
Shop at: Topman, Burton
Enjoys: Being physically active, playing video games and likes adrenaline rushes
Listens to: Classic Rock, Rap
This person is a prime example of the male audience as he enjoys adrenaline rushes therefore he seeks to be thrilled. This type of person would mostly go to see our film and be fully engaged into the world of Broken. due to the stimulating camera angles, dark lighting and eerie silence from the lack of dialogue.

Female audience:
Shops at: Topshop, New Look
Enjoys: going out with friends, fashion shopping and seeks to be thrilled
Listens to: RnB, Hip-Hop
Similarly to the male audience, the female audience would want to have an enjoyable thrilling time with her friends thus, they would go to see a film that is dark, mysterious and extremely thrilling.
